MATIJA GUBEC SQUARE used to be called Piazza dei signori, and judging by Gothic and Baroque palaces which were preserved or fully renovated after WWII, this Square was the centre of mansion houses. Unfortunately, its western facade was irretrievably ruined mainly as a consequency of the WWII bombing, which has made room for the park. The square pavement surface was thorougly examined in the late 20th century, when the stone surface was also renovated. The south town gates used to lead from the Square to the port.
